Kunzea oil (Kunzea ambigua) is an exciting new essential oil which belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is native to Australia.

It is wild harvested and steam distilled in North Eastern Tasmania and is a tall shrub which grows three to five metres in height, with abundant white or pink flowers.

Native animals have been known to sleep under Kunzea plants, where they are believed to seek relief from ticks and other parasites, giving the plant its popular name of “Tick Bush”.

Kunzea Oil is relatively new to the market, and has been listed with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration for “the temporary relief of the pain of arthritis and rheumatism; relief of the symptoms of influenza; relief of muscular aches and pain; and the relief of nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety.”

It has a high content of important sesquiterpene compounds: globulol, viridiflorol, spathulenol, ledol and bicyclogermacrene. Sesquiterpenes are recognised for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Kunzea Oil has been found to be a non-irritant and generally is well tolerated even when used undiluted on the skin.
